CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“WALKER, I KNOW IT’S A LOT to ask,” Brooke said. “But I’m really in a bad spot. My father is still angry with me and…”

Walker caught sight of Trina, alone for the first time, at the reception. He’d watched her dance with Chad and chat with some guy who looked interested in engaging her in more than conversation.

The prospect made his stomach burn. It didn’t help that Brooke kept appearing at his side asking for his help. He saw Trina look his way and she met his gaze for a long moment that made something inside him feel like a cool stream was easing all his rough places. Then she looked to his left and away.

Brooke’s voice continued in his left ear. “If you could just help me this one time—”

“I’ll talk to you later,” Walker said, cutting her off and heading for Trina.

Dora stepped directly in his path and smiled with scary determination. “I’d love to steal you onto the dance floor.”

“Not now, thanks,” Walker said and continued around her. Waving a few times at people who called his name, he wove through the crowd and finally arrived in front of Trina.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi yourself,” she said and smiled.

“You’ve been busy,” he said.

She lifted her eyebrows. “So have you.”

“Take me away,” he dared her.

She paused, her expression torn. “I’ve already done that before.”

“So let me take you away.”

She met his gaze and he saw a shot of vulnerability deepen her dark eyes. “I don’t want to do anything to make me feel like somebody’s little mistake again.”

Although she’d often joked about their night of pity sex, in that moment he could see that she carried some shame from it. Her shame stabbed at him.

“Okay. I can still take you away. It doesn’t have to be for a wild night of—”

Trina’s eyes grew round. “Brooke! It’s great to see you. You look lovely.”

Brooke looked at Trina for a long moment. “I know I’ve met you. You work for Bellagio and you did the QVC thing. Great job, by the way. I’m sorry I don’t remember your name.”

“Trina Roberts,” Walker said. “She works in PR for Bellagio.”

“Oh, nice to meet you again, Trina,” Brooke said.

“Brooke has been talking to me this evening about wanting to work for Bellagio in some capacity,” Walker said to Trina.

Trina blinked. “Really?”

Brooke gave an uneasy smile. “Yes, Daddy is still unhappy about what happened—” She glanced at Walker. “You know what I mean. And uh, I’m—” she lowered her voice “—having some cash-flow issues.”

“You need a job,” Trina said, disbelief in her voice.

“Yeah, I guess I do.”

Trina was silent for a moment, then looked at Walker. “What about the new activewear line?”

“What about it?” he asked.

“Maybe Brooke could promote it,” Trina said.

“You mean model?” Brooke said, lighting up.

“Not exactly,” Trina said. “The position calls for more of a spokesperson or representative. We’ll be promoting the new line in department stores, at women’s trade shows. Maybe you could do that.”

“I guess it’s possible,” Walker said, impressed that Trina had come up with the idea so quickly.
